FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
First USA Mountain Running
Championship Set for July 6
VAIL, Colo. - (June 30, 2003) - The first ever USA Mountain Running
Championship will be held on July 6 in Vail, Colorado, in conjunction with
the 25th annual Vail Hill Climb. The breathtaking 8-mile course gradually
climbs from 8,200 feet at the start to 10,350 feet at the finish line.
The championship is sponsored by Teva and will have a prize purse of
$1450.
Men's and women's Open and Masters national championship races will be
held
concurrently, and age-group medals and Teva footwear prizes will also be
awarded to the top three athletes in each age division. Only athletes with
current USATF memberships prior to the race are eligible for the
championship prizes and awards. Information about USATF membership is
available at www.usatf.org. Athletes
can join USATF on the morning of the
race at the registration table.
One of the best mountain running races in Colorado, the Vail Hill Climb
typically draws about 400 runners of all abilities.
"We've had a lot of elite runners run this race in the past, so I
think we
should have a pretty good race for the first championship," says race
director Mike Ortiz. "It should be an exciting, competitive race for
both
the men and the women."
Last year's Vail Hill Climb was won by Simon Gutierrez, of Albuquerque,
New
Mexico in 50:09, as he outran Paul Low (Amherst, Mass.) to the top of the
mountain. Anita Ortiz, 38, of nearby Eagle, Colo., won the women's race in
1:00:44. A U.S. Mountain Team member in 2002, Gutierrez, 37, who now lives
in Alamosa, Colorado, won the 6.4-mile Teva Spring Run-off on June 7 and
should be one of the favorites for the Hill Climb.
The winner of this year's men's race will receive an automatic berth on
the
Teva U.S. Mountain Running Team that will compete at the World Mountain
Running Trophy in Girdwood, Alaska this September. (The women's winner
will
not earn an automatic spot on the U.S. team, but will receive strong
consideration in the at-large bid selection.)
More than a dozen former U.S. Mountain Running Team members will be vying
for a berth on this year's team, including Kari DiStefano (Telluride,
Colo.), Kelli Lusk (Manitou Springs, Colo.), Rene Frazee (Salida, Colo.),
Cindy O'Neill (Manitou Springs, Colo.), Julie Bryan (Jackson, Wyo.), Dave
Dunham (Bradford, Mass.), Richard Bolt (Manchester, N.H.), Eric Morse
(Montpelier, Vt.), Paul Low (Amherst, Mass.)
The establishment of an official national championship for mountain
running
reflects the growth of trail running in the U.S. Having an official
mountain
championship race at a sub-ultra distance has been a goal of the USATF
Mountain/Ultra/Trail Running Council since its inception in 1998. Bids for
2004 and 2005 championships will be accepted later this year and awarded
in
the fall.
"It provides trail runners who might not normally join USA Track
& Field a
reason to join because they have the opportunity to compete in a
championship event and a chance to win medals and prizes," says Nancy
Hobbs,
chairperson of USATF's MUT Council. "And it's a new opportunity for
events
to pursue a relationship with USA Track & Field and to continue to
promote
trail and mountain running."
The Vail Hill Climb will begin promptly at 8:30 a.m. from the Mountain
Haus
across the street from the Vail Village Parking Structure. Free gondola
rides up and down the mountain are available for spectators and racers.
Pre-registration fees are $22 (through July 4). Runners can register
between
7 and 8:15 a.m. the morning of the race for $32.

TWIN CITIES MARATHON AUCTION AND POSTER
UNVEILING
RAISES OVER $8,200 FOR LOCAL CHARITIES
MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. - (July 1, 2003) - The 22nd annual Twin Cities Marathon
(TCM) raised $8,239 for local charities during this year's poster
unveiling
and silent auction, held on June 26 at 222 an event hosted by Joseph's
Catering in Minneapolis. Additional fund raising activities are
contributing
toward the marathon's goal of raising money for local charities and
scholarships, including the auctioning of 100 Marathon and 100 two-year TC
10 Mile Run entries.
TCM Executive Director Dan Finanger said "What a pleasure to see that
there
is such ongoing community support for the marathon organization, and for
all
our of Community Partners."
The poster unveiling and silent auction was attended by nearly 300 guests,
including representatives of the marathon's selected charities. TCM's 2003
charity partnerships are with Assistive Technology of Minnesota, Bolder
Options, Second Harvest Heartland, Team USA Minnesota and the TCM
scholarship program. For more information about the Community Partners,
visit www.twincitiesmarathon.org.
Also present at the auction were TCM sponsors, members of the board of
directors, race officials, volunteers and members of the TCM Charter Club.
There are 81 members of the Charter Club who are marathon participants and
have finished all 21 of the previous Twin Cities Marathons. Charter Club
members will be featured guests at other upcoming events in conjunction
with
the 22nd running of the Twin Cities Marathon this October.
More than 70 businesses and individuals donated items for this year's
event.
Items included tickets to this summer's hottest concerts from Clear
Channel
Communications, a Mazda Miata convertible for a weekend from Morrie's
Automotive Group and a 4'x 8' limited edition print of this year's
marathon
poster from Process Displays.
A highlight and tradition of the silent auction is the unveiling of the
TCM
poster. This year's poster was designed by Minneapolis artist Mark McKay
for
Cub Foods Marketing & Advertising, a major marathon sponsor. His
design
features a series of photographs taken along the marathon's 26.2 mile
route.
"The marathon's tagline inspired me," says McKay, referring to
"The Most
Beautiful Urban Marathon in America(tm)." He continues, "The
poster tells
the story of the journey each athlete makes to complete those 26.2
miles."
Each photograph is accompanied by a descriptive narrative, contributed by
copywriter Jason Troiden, who has run the marathon course himself. The
photos and words combine to dramatically highlight the athleticism of the
event with the beauty of the course.
Each person attending the silent auction received a complimentary poster,
which was printed by Daily Printing. It is one of the most highly
sought-after souvenirs of the race for marathon participants, volunteers
and
spectators. Previous posters have won awards from various organizations,
including a top five recognition in the 2001 & 2002 Runner's World
Poster
Contests, which acknowledges races that excel in promoting their race.
"In
this tremendously creative community, we are happy to be well-known for
our
original and artistic posters," says Finanger.
To view or purchase the poster, visit www.twincitiesmarathon.org
or stop by
the TCM office. The poster will also be available during marathon weekend,
and McKay will be on hand to sign them.
The 2003 Twin Cities Marathon weekend is October 3-5. The three-day
weekend
celebration of fitness includes a 5K run/walk, children's fun runs, pasta
dinner, two-day health and fitness expo and a 10-mile race in addition to
the marathon. Twin Cities Marathon, a Running USA Founding Member,
continues
its 12th consecutive year as the designated USATF National Masters
Championship for men and women. Major corporate sponsors for the marathon
are Cub Foods and Seagate Technology. The major media sponsors are KARE 11
and Cities 97. Twin Cities Marathon, Inc. is a non-profit organization
that
directs the TCM weekend as a community service for the Minneapolis/St.
Paul
area. Visit us at www.twincitiesmarathon.org.
