Question: recently started walking/jogging around Town Lake about a month ago. A few days ago, after tying my shoe, I pulled the back end of my sock out and unintentionally created a lot of tension on my toes (particularly on the second toe of my left foot). My toenail is now bruised and it is painful at times to wear socks. Should I wait for the bruising/pain to go away before going back out to the trail and just keep it to the elliptical at the gym? I'm kind of worried about it, being a diabetic, and not sure if I should contact my PCP for something that appears to seem somewhat minor.
Answer: First, I am not a doctor, but as a long-time runner, I have had my share of blackened toenails. They ususally end up falling off and being replaced as a new toenail grows in. However, as you no doubt know, diabetics face speical foot concerns. Keep an eye on it, and make sure it does not get infected. If it appears to be healing nicely, you should be able to resume your training. But if it stays painful, and you notice anything wrong, by all means, head for your doctor before it develops any further. |
